Pascal Doury (1956-2001) is a French artist and zine publisher from Paris. Doury and Bruno Richard met in 1966 at the “Maison d’enfants de Sèvres”, a haven for children from broken homes and orphans. They later on drew apart and both followed art studies. They reconnected years later in the mid seventies and published a portfolio which quickly established them with like-minded artists in the Paris Underground scene. They created Elles Sont De Sortie (The Girls are Out or Girls Night Out) in 1977, the year of Punk exploded. They published together more than a hundred issues until Doury died of lung cancer in 2001, Richard took over the publication ever since with the mention “Sans Pascal” (without) Pascal.
The work displayed on this page is another publishing endeavour led by Doury alone. L’Encyclopédie des Images is a monumental zine archive created printed by Doury when he was a night guard at the newspaper Libération. In this collection of 350 to 400 zines, Doury created a gathering of all the images that he liked and that inspired him. Malevitch’ Black Square, sewing templates, 19th century catalogues, and many other intriguing images compose this encyclopedia of images that contains all the signs that were important to him and catched his attention. There isn’t a single source that is credited in this enormous mass of images, making it hard to use it as a proper archive or encyclopedia. But an informed viewer might recognize the works of artists friends of Doury, such as Gary Panter, Gérard Zlotykamien or his own daughter Dora Diamant Doury whose little notes and games became part of an amazing dictionary of the artist gaze.
